Taking mass-produced, soulless items and turning them works of art that question and challenge the manufactured world we live in today is the base of Matthew Spencer‘s art. Old abandoned buildings or vehicles, sometimes vandalized or burnt out amidst woods and forests are some of the subject matter that occupies Spencer’s disenchanted landscapes. He is interested in our landscape, our everyday environments, and how our world is represented to us through visual information.
Using materials such as cardboard and stock paper that can be bought at any bulk store, Spencer cuts and paints the scenes. The final project is an incredible 3D scene of the forest reclaiming old and abandoned man-made objects.
